Lunch Bullying

Summary: In the article, the author describes the bullying that was associated with his malodorous lunches and how he aimed to fit in with the American kids.

Deviant Phrase: "Dog sandwich," describes a racial Chinese stereotype that many Americans believe. The author thought the bully was referring to a hot dog, but he was actually talking about eating a dog.

Vocabulary: "Ignominy," refers to a great personal dishonor or humiliation. 


Abstract Connection: In the movie "Mean Girls," Cady tried to fit in with the mean girls by changing the group of people who she hung out with, which reflected a change in her identity. In the article, the author wanted to fit in with the American kids, so he changed his identity to act "Americanized."

Summary: In the article, the author describes a method that Horne uses to portray the relationship between the bully, the victim, and the bystander.


Deviant Phrase: "Performing an illusion with chains," refers to Horner's attempt to encourage the students to create a chain reaction so they can make a difference in their communities. 


Deviant Phrase: "Stretched its neck and closed in on the girl's nose," illustrates how the bullies try to instill fear in their victims. 


Vocabulary: A "bystander," is  a person who is present at an event without participating in it.


Vocabulary: "Reaction," is a response to a stimulus.

Abstract Connection: The video inspires viewers to be more eco-friendly by sending on the message and forming a chain reaction, whereas the article encourages students to stop the bullying by linking together to change their schools and communities.

Anti-Bullying Awareness Month

Summary: In the article, it illustrates Lewinsky's campaign against bullying as well as her efforts to fight back against a nationwide problem.



Deviant Phrase: Lewinsky uses the phrase "habit of action," to describe the little changes that can take place to prevent bullying. Lewinsky states that simple acts of kindness, courage, and inclusion can shift the mindset of a culture.


Deviant Phrase: The phrase "public eye," illustrates Lewinsky's attempt to remain out of the public following her affair with President Bill Clinton. Lewinsky has not let the past affect her, but she chooses to keep her personal life private.


Vocabulary: The term "humiliating," refers to a feeling of loss of pride, dignity, or self-respect. The online shaming experience was humiliating for Lewinsky.



Vocabulary: "Ambassador," is a diplomatic official of the highest rank. Lewinsky is an ambassador for an anti-bullying organization called Bystander Revolution.



Abstract Connection:  The song Overcomer shares similar motives with Lewinsky's story. A person can rise up against all odds and overcome the difficulties of life. Lewinsky is not ashamed of who she is today, yet she suffered from shame.
