Bullying in the Workplace

Summary: In the article, the author explores the relationship between bullying and suicidal thoughts in the workplace and how workers are more prone to suicidal thoughts if they work in a hostile enviornment.



Deviant Phrase: The author uses the phrase "chicken and egg," to describe the relationship between bullying and suicidal thoughts. Like the chicken and egg, it is hard to determine which one comes first.



Deviant Phrase: The phrase "specific predisposition," refers to the different circumstances that can lead to suicide. Workers can commit suicide if they have recently been exposed to bullying.



Vocabulary: The term "predisposition" means a tendency, inclination, or susceptibility. Workers are more likely to commit suicide depending on their predisposition.


Vocabulary: "Precursor," means one that precedes and indicates. The author explains that bullying is a precursor of suicidal ideation.

Who knew that bullying could becoming increasingly common in the workplace? Bullying usually affects young children and young adolescents. It was shocking to find out that victims of bullying in the workplace are twice as likely to commit suicide.



Abstract Connection: In the movie "Cyberbully," the main character was a target of bullying.The situation spiraled out of control and she even attempted to commit suicide. Victims of bullying in the workplace often experience suicidal thoughts that may lead to their death.

Bullying

Summary: In the article, the author describes a personal account in which she was constantly tormented by a group of boys and she refused to report the incidents. 



Deviant Phrase: "Read them the riot act," expresses the father's actions towards the boys that had been bullying his daughter. 

Deviant Phrase: The author uses the phrase "infected the entire class,"  to illustrate the severity of the bullying. Infect means to affect with disease, but there was no disease. The author is referring to bullying as the disease that affected the class. 




Vocabulary: The term "relentlessly," describes a situation that is unyielding in severity or strictness. The author was relentlessly threatened for six months.




Vocabulary: "Innocuous," means having no adverse effect. The author describes soccer as one of the innocuous things that only a handful of people really know about her. 




Abstract Connection: Even though the author was threatened and physically attacked, she refused to let anyone know. The author made several attempts to inform her parents, but she feared that the teacher would call her a "tattletale." The author mentioned that she was ridiculed because of the clothes she wore. Rachel Crow's music video, "Mean Girls," can relate to the story of the author.

A college student was beaten to his death during a hazing ritual. Imagine what would have happened if the author's father hadn't found out about his daughter being bullied. The situation could have been worse; she could have died.

Bullying: Overcoming the Past

Summary: Do not let the past define the future.

Deviant Phrase: "The bullies might say something to you like 30 times, but you repeat it 10,000 times." The bullies constantly harass their victims by name-calling. It affects the person being bullied by lowering their self-esteem. 




Deviant Phrase: "Time heals nothing; it's what you do with that time." Many people know that time is a limiting factor and some will even say that time heals things. Time does not heal this situation; it affected the victims mentally, physically, and verbally. 



Vocabulary: "Traumatized" refers to a lasting shock as a result of an emotionally disturbing experience or physical injury. All three girls were victims of bullying and it traumatized their hopes for the future. 


Vocabulary: "Alleged" is an incident that is declared or stated to be as described. The girls can either move on with their life or stay traumatized for the rest of their life.  



Abstract Connection: Jessie J's music video "Who You Are," is a song that can relate to anyone that has been bullied, depressed, and struggled with low-self esteem. 




Abstract Connection: Mourning the loss over a loved one can be tough. Just like bullying, time cannot heal the loss of a loved one.
